Dotted line 1 indicates the onset of the rapid homeostatic responses, i.e. the reduction in the intracellular volume (C) and the increased AVP release (B). The need-induced water intake (F) is further engaged when the ECF [Na+] overpasses the threshold for drinking (A, dotted line 2). Solid line 3 indicates the first drinking bout induced by the dehydration. Note that the decrease in AVP level (B) is correlated with the increased water absorption at the level of the digestive tract (F).
